What is the ruling on excessive obsessive doubts (waswasa) in ablution (wudu') and prayer, and the feeling of passing wind or urine, and the inability to differentiate between certainty and doubt?

The obsessive thoughts you experience regarding the emission of wind or urine are from Satan, and their cure lies in seeking refuge in the remembrance of Allah and disregarding these thoughts. Perform ablution once and begin your prayer without paying attention to them. Attribute every sensation of that nature to obsessive whispers (waswasa), as it is doubt and illusion with no basis in reality. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Let him seek refuge with Allah and desist" (Bukhari and Muslim). Ignoring obsessive whispers is an effective remedy for them, and whoever listens to them will find them increasing until they lead to madness.

For one afflicted with obsessive whispers, let them say: "I believe in Allah and His Messengers." Indeed, whoever calls to mind the ways of the Messengers and their easy Sharia will be rid of the ailment of obsessive whispers. In Ibn al-Sunni's book, it is reported from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): "Whoever is afflicted with these obsessive whispers should say: 'We believe in Allah and His Messengers' three times, for that will remove them from him."

When Uthman ibn Abi al-'As complained to the Prophet (peace be upon him) about the devil that came between him and his prayer, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him: "That is a devil called Khanzab. Seek refuge in Allah from him and spit to your left three times" (Muslim).

It is recommended for one afflicted with obsessive whispers in ablution or prayer to say: "There is no god but Allah," for when Satan hears the remembrance of Allah, he retreats. The most beneficial cure for repelling obsessive whispers is to turn to the remembrance of Allah and to do so frequently.

Also, recite Ayat al-Kursi before sleeping, and say: "In the Name of Allah, with Whose Name nothing on earth or in the heavens can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing" three times in the morning and evening. Recite Surah al-Ikhlas and the two Mu'awwidhat (Surah al-Falaq and Surah an-Nas) three times, blowing into your hands and then wiping your body. Supplicate to Allah by saying: "Remove the harm, Lord of mankind, and heal, for You are the Healer. There is no cure but Your cure, a cure that leaves no illness behind." And recite the supplication for distress: "There is no god but Allah, the All-Great, the Forbearing. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the Magnificent Throne. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth and Lord of the Noble Throne." After ablution or ghusl, be certain that you are purified and cast away the obsessive whispers and prolonged stay in the bathroom.
