A firm intention is a condition for the validity of the fast. Hesitation or a conditional intention is not sufficient. Therefore, a make-up fast (qada') with a wavering intention is not valid. Some scholars differentiate between intending to break the fast, which does not invalidate it, and breaking the intention, which does invalidate it.
