A firm intention is a condition for the validity of the fast. Hesitation or a conditional intention is not sufficient. Therefore, a make-up fast (qada') with a wavering intention is not valid. However, one can complete the fast as a supererogatory (nafl) act, as the intention for a supererogatory fast can be made during the day.
Some scholars differentiate between intending to break the fast, which does not invalidate it, and breaking the intention, which does invalidate it.
It is not necessary to seek the husband's permission for a make-up fast, and he does not have the right to invalidate it.
