The majority of scholars hold that a small quantity of water (less than two qullahs) becomes impure upon contact with an impurity. Therefore, if impure clothes are placed in a washing machine containing water less than two qullahs, the water becomes impure, and it then renders everything it touches, including other clothes, impure. The correct method for washing impure clothes along with others in a washing machine is either to purify the impure items before placing them in the machine or to introduce water to all items. The addition of detergent or water circulation does not affect this ruling, as the crucial factor is the removal of the impure substance itself.
