Which of the following hadiths applies to someone who sleeps through the night vigil prayer (qiyam al-layl): "He who sleeps until morning, Satan has urinated in his ear," or "There is no one who is accustomed to praying at night, then sleep overcomes him, but that the reward for his prayer will be written for him, and his sleep will be considered a charity for him"? And how can a Muslim know this?

Scholars have differed regarding the meaning of the man in whose ears Satan urinated and who slept until morning: - Some said: He slept through the Tahajjud (late-night) prayer and night vigil. - Others said: He slept through the obligatory prayer (either the 'Isha or Fajr prayer). - And it was said: It could refer to both.

As for one who slept through the night vigil but intended to perform it, or slept through an obligatory prayer but intended to perform it, his sleep is considered a charity and he is rewarded for his prayer.
