The answer

Fasting the six days of Shawwal on behalf of the deceased is a supererogatory fast, and its reward reaches the deceased according to some scholars, such as Ahmad and Abu Hanifa. This is also the view of some Shafi’is and others. The other view—which is well-known among the Malikis and Shafi’is—is that its reward does not reach the deceased. It is better for a person to act for themselves and to supplicate for the dead, by the consensus of scholars.
