What is the ruling on changing or altering the name of a tribe, and is it permissible to name a person after his tribe if he has a sub-tribe?

There is no impediment to changing one's personal or tribal name for a legitimate purpose, unless it involves attributing oneself to other than one's father, due to the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Whoever claims to be the son of other than his father, or attributes himself to other than his masters, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people. Allah will not accept from him on the Day of Judgment any repentance or ransom." It is permissible for a Muslim to attribute himself to his tribe, clan, or closer branch, as long as he does not attribute himself to other than his origins, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Companions used to do.
