What is the ruling on keeping pace with the times from the perspective of mixing (between genders) in Islam?

The mixing of men and women, as commonly practiced today, is impermissible due to the corruption and incitement of desires it leads to. Allah has commanded lowering the gaze and has forbidden mixing except with maharim (unmarriageable kin). Evidence for this includes the arrangement of rows in congregational prayer, where the front rows for men are preferred because of their distance from women, and vice versa for women's rows. The Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded men to delay their departure from the mosque until women had left, to prevent mixing.

Mixing has caused numerous evils, including: the spread of immorality, the incitement of desires, the violation of honor, an increase in illegitimate children, and the emergence of a generation with no clear lineage. Mixing has spread in Muslim societies due to imitating disbelievers and enacting laws that promote it, in addition to the weakening of religious commitment. Therefore, efforts must be made to prevent its causes and to adapt reality according to the requirements of Islamic law.
