Does the verse: "Indeed, We created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another" mean the permissibility of a female intermingling with males for the purpose of acquaintance and discussion of general topics, knowing that if a girl nowadays speaks with one [man] today, tomorrow you will see her with a thousand?

The general principle regarding the mixing of unrelated men and women is to avoid it, due to the potential for fitna (temptation/strife). The Lawgiver has encouraged women to remain in their homes and not to travel except with a mahram (unmarriageable kin). A woman should also keep a distance from men even if she prays in the mosque, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The best rows for women are the last ones, and the worst are the first ones."

As for mixing in schools and gatherings, there are various concerns; among them are a woman's displaying her beauty to unrelated men, their looking at her, and what might occur of joking, soft speech, or khalwa (private seclusion), all of which are forbidden. However, if the Islamic guidelines are observed, such as covering, lowering the gaze, avoiding khalwa and soft speech, then it is permissible.
