What is the meaning of the Prophetic Hadith: "Calamity continues to befall the believer until he meets Allah with no sin upon him"?

The Hadith means that the measure of a man's trial (tribulation) is commensurate with the strength and completeness of his faith. Thus, one who is strong in faith will experience intense tribulation, while one who is weak in faith will have mild tribulation. Tribulation does not cease to afflict the servant until it purifies him from his sins, making him like someone released from prison with no harm upon him. And whoever thinks that intense tribulation is a humiliation for the servant has erred, for the greatest among people were afflicted with severe tribulations.
