Is it permissible to delay fulfilling a vow to free a slave and fast for three days until the required amount for freeing the slave is secured?
If fulfilling a vow of manumission is impossible in this era due to the absence of slaves, then one is not obligated to fulfill it. The Shafi'i jurists have explicitly stated that if a person vows to free a specific slave, and that slave perishes or is destroyed before being emancipated, the person is not obligated to replace them.
However, it is more cautious to offer an expiation for an oath (kaffarat ). Hanbali jurists have stipulated the necessity of an expiation for an oath when fulfilling a vow becomes impossible, citing the of 'Uqbah ibn 'Amir, in which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The expiation for a vow is the expiation for an oath."
