What is the reason for the martyr's wish to return to the world to be killed again? Is it out of a desire to multiply his status, or because he feels that his life is cheap compared to the reward God has granted him, so he wishes he were killed many times to feel that he deserved his status?

Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated from Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "No one who enters Paradise would wish to return to the world, even if he were given everything on earth, except the martyr. He would wish to return to the world and be killed ten times because of the honor he sees." This meaning is further confirmed by another narration in Muslim that mentions the martyr wishing to return to be killed due to the merit of martyrdom he perceives. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar mentioned in Al-Fath a Hadith (definition) Qudsi (divine narration) in which the people of Paradise are asked what they wish for, and the martyr wishes to return to be killed ten times due to the merit of martyrdom he has seen. It is also mentioned in a Hadith narrated by Ibn Mas'ud in Sahih (definition) Muslim that after Allah asks the martyrs what they desire, they say: "We wish for our souls to be returned to our bodies so that we may be killed in Your cause once again."

Al-Muhallab is of the view that the reason the martyr wishes to return to the world to be killed again is his witnessing of the great honor he attained through martyrdom. Ibn Battal stated that the martyr wishes to be killed ten times because he knows that this pleases Allah and brings him closer to Him, as jihad is the only act in which one sacrifices his soul, and thus its reward is immense. The wisdom behind the martyr wishing to return and be killed repeatedly is due to the merit of martyrdom he sees, and the honor Allah has prepared for martyrs, and that martyrdom is the ultimate and best of righteous deeds.
