How is the Companions' lack of knowledge regarding the abrogation of temporary marriage (Mut'ah) during the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and the eras of Abu Bakr and Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, to be understood, considering the importance of this legislation and that they were the first two caliphs of the Muslims?

The aforementioned statement indicates the practice of Mut'ah (temporary marriage) by some Muslims after its prohibition, whether during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him, or during the eras of Abu Bakr and Umar. Mut'ah was permitted then prohibited several times, and its prohibition has been established until the Day of Judgment. The fact that the final ruling remained unknown to some Companions is not surprising, as some rulings were unknown to senior Companions like Abu Bakr and Umar. This does not diminish the preservation of the Sharia through the collective knowledge of the Ummah.
