What is the ruling on leaving food, whether a little or a lot, in the plate after finishing the Iftar meal in Ramadan?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

There is no evidence that the plate prays for whoever eats the leftovers from the food in it. However, the Sunnah encourages the Muslim to scrape the bowl clean and not leave anything for Satan, because the blessing in food is not known in which part of it it lies. Al-Nawawi explained blessing as an increase and the establishment of goodness, and that it may be in the eaten food or what remains of it. Food must be preserved and not thrown away as long as it is fit for consumption; if it is not desired, it should be given to animals.
