Is it permissible for a man to take a loan from a bank to cover household expenses or pay his rent, in the event that there is no one who can lend to him or from whom he can borrow?
It is permissible to borrow from a bank through Sharia-compliant methods, such as a benevolent loan (qard hasan) or purchasing a commodity with an installment-based increase (murabaha). However, it is not permissible to borrow through forbidden usurious loans, concerning which severe warnings have been mentioned in the Qur'an and Sunnah.
Necessity does not permit borrowing with usury, because the one in a state of dire necessity (mudtarr) is he who fears for his life.
Dealing with banks should be avoided as much as possible, even through Sharia-compliant methods, because their funds are often not free from unlawful elements. And whoever safeguards himself from doubtful matters has indeed cleared himself in respect to his religion and honor.
