Are the wives of the Messenger mothers of the believing men but not the believing women, and what is the proof for that?

The wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) are mothers of all believers, men and women, according to the preponderant opinion. The evidence for this is the generality of the Almighty's saying: "The Prophet is more worthy of the believers than themselves, and his wives are their mothers."

This generality includes both men and women, and it is supported by the recitation of Ibn Abbas and Ubayy ibn Ka'b: "And he is a father to them."
