The marfu' hadith is: that which is attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, whether it be a saying, an action, an approval, or a description, regardless of whether the chain of narration is connected or disconnected. It is called marfu' (elevated) in reference to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who holds an elevated status.

As for the mawquf hadith, it is: that which is attributed to a Companion, whether it be a saying, an action, or an approval, regardless of whether the chain of narration is connected or disconnected.

And as for the maqtu' hadith, it is: that which is attributed to a Tabi'i (successor) or someone below him, whether it be a saying or an action, regardless of whether the chain of narration to the Tabi'i is connected or disconnected.
