If the girl is religious and of good character, try to convince your father to agree to the marriage, even by seeking help from righteous people. If he refuses, it is better not to disobey him, even if the engagement has taken place, because it is narrated that Abdullah ibn Umar divorced his wife by order of the Prophet (peace be upon him) when he learned that it was Umar's wish.
