A wife is not permitted to refuse her husband's bed. If a man says to his wife, "By Allah, I will not approach you until you ask me for intercourse, or until you come to me for intercourse," this is an oath of īlāʾ according to the Malikis. If he has intercourse with her before she asks him, he has broken his oath, and his īlāʾ is dissolved. If four months pass, she has the choice between remaining married or seeking a divorce. Īlāʾ is prescribed for disciplining or reforming the wife. It is disliked by the Hanbalis and permissible according to the majority of scholars for spouses to remove their clothes during intercourse.
