Is Iblis the father of all Jinn (the righteous and the devils) or of devils only?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Devils are the disbelievers among jinn. Iblīs is the father of all jinn, their believers and disbelievers alike; he is their origin and their offspring. Many scholars have adopted this view, including Ibn ʿAbbās, Mujāhid, Qatādah, and Al-Ḥasan Al-Baṣrī. Shaykh Al-Islām (Ibn Taymiyyah), his student Ibn Al-Qayyim, and Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar referred to Iblīs as "the father of thejinn." Furthermore, Shaykh Ibn Bāz indicated that Iblīs is the father of the jinn according to a number of scholars. Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn stated that Iblīs is the father of the jinn, based on Allah’s Almighty saying: "And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire" (Qur’an 55:15); His saying about Iblīs: "You created me from fire" (Qur’an 7:12); and His saying: "Will you then take him and his offspring as protectors instead of Me?" (Qur’an 18:50).
