What is the ruling on a woman following the Facebook pages of her male friends and keeping up with their news? Is this action haram or halal?

It is permissible for a woman to participate on Facebook and access the pages of men and women, provided there is no Sharia-prohibited element in doing so. However, one should not be overly preoccupied with social media sites and waste time on them. Instead, free time should be utilized for beneficial activities, such as memorizing the Quran and seeking knowledge. A girl's following of men's pages is a waste of time and may lead to temptation (fitna) and the establishment of forbidden relationships. The Sharia encourages blocking the means that lead to corruption. The advice for those who waste their time is to utilize it for what benefits their religion and their worldly life, and to beware of idleness and the steps of Satan. For the fortunate one is he who fills his time with acts of obedience, and the wretched one is he who is engrossed in idleness and wastes his time.
