What is the ruling on praying behind an Imam who intones the Qur'an instead of reciting it properly, and does intonation lead to the distortion of some words?

If the Imam's chanting (talḥīn) does not alter the meaning of the word, then prayer behind him is valid. However, excessive chanting is considered reprehensible (makrūh) by the majority of jurists and deemed an innovation (bidʿah), whereas beautifying one's voice during recitation, without violating its fundamental principles, is desirable (mustaḥabb). But if the chanting leads to a change in the meaning of the word, especially in Al-Fatiha, then prayer behind him is not valid.
