What is the ruling on a woman lengthening her abaya, and is it obligatory if she wears socks?

A woman's feet are considered 'awrah' (private parts) during prayer and in the presence of non- men; therefore, she must cover them. The covering does not necessarily have to be with an abaya but can be with any sufficient covering. Lengthening the abaya is better as it provides more complete concealment.
