The answer

The majority of scholars hold that the sheep sufficient for 'Aqiqah is the same as that sufficient for Udhiyah (sacrifice), and it is stipulated that it must be a "Thaniyyah," meaning it has shed its two front teeth and new ones have grown in their place. This is based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Do not slaughter except a Musinnah, unless it is difficult for you, in which case you may slaughter a Jadha'ah of sheep."

A "Musinnah" is a Thaniyyah among camels, cattle, and sheep. Accordingly, slaughtering a kid (jady) is not sufficient for 'Aqiqah unless it refers to a goat that has passed one year of age.
