Is borrowing gold to be returned weight for weight considered usury (riba)?
Multiple prophetic texts have been transmitted regarding the categories of usury (riba), among them the hadith of 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit, may Allah be pleased with him. Lending (qard) is permissible by the consensus of Muslims, whether concerning usurious wealth or otherwise. It is a contract of donation, aid, and benevolence, not a contract of sale or exchange. Therefore, immediate possession (al-taqabud al-fawri) is not a condition for it, as it is a condition in usurious sales. If the condition of immediate possession were applied to lending, lending would cease to exist for all usurious wealth.
