What is the ruling regarding a wife who experiences intermittent menstrual bleeding throughout the the month concerning her performance of acts of worship?
Your wife is considered to be suffering from istihada (non-menstrual vaginal bleeding) according to the majority of scholars, because she does not experience a period of purity between the two bleeding incidents that reaches the minimum duration of purity between two menstrual cycles. Therefore, the second bleeding is not considered a second menstruation, and it is not possible to consider all bleeding as menstruation due to it exceeding the maximum duration of menstruation. If she had a previous regular habit, she should consider the blood she sees during her usual days as menstruation, and anything beyond that as istihada. If she did not have a regular habit but could distinguish the blood (e.g., by color or consistency), she should consider the days of the blood she distinguished as menstruation, and anything else as istihada. If she had neither a regular habit nor the ability to distinguish, she should consider the blood she saw for six or seven days as menstruation, according to the common practice of women.
