Is repentance permissible out of fear of worldly punishment?
A servant must hasten to repent from every sin, as indicated by the texts of the Qur’an and Sunnah. It is permissible for repentance to be out of fear of Allah’s punishment in this world, and hope for His forgiveness, pleasure, and reward in the Hereafter. This does not contradict sincerity. Gloating is forbidden, based on the hadith: "Do not express gloating to your brother, lest Allah have mercy on him and afflict you," and because it contradicts the brotherhood of faith. Therefore, you must repent to Allah the Almighty.
