Is a person rewarded for striving against his self for the sake of obedience?
Patience is of three types: patience in the face of calamities, patience in abstaining from sins, and patience in performing acts of obedience. And whoever strives against his lower self to persist in acts of obedience will be rewarded, and Allah will grant him success and guide him to the straight path, for Allah Almighty says: (And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good). So, the one who is patient in obedience will be rewarded, and Allah will increase him in guidance. And striving is a door to success. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Rabia bin Ka'b al-Aslami when he asked him about his companionship in Paradise: "Help me in that by increasing your prostrations," and this requires striving.
