Is it obligatory to obey the father in not gradually cutting the hair, even if the difference is not noticeable?
The answer clarifies that what is meant by the question – if it is about tapering hair – does not fall under the prohibited Qaza' and is permissible, unless it leads to imitating the wicked or disbelievers.
If it involves forbidden imitation, then obedience to the father in abandoning it becomes obligatory, because imitation is Islamically forbidden (and whoever imitates a people is one of them).
However, if it is permissible (no imitation involved), then obedience to the father in abandoning it is not obligatory, unless he is distressed by it. In that case, obedience to him becomes obligatory, because distressing parents is filial disobedience.
It is encouraged to gain the father's satisfaction as much as possible, for in the parents' satisfaction lies the Lord's satisfaction.
