It is forbidden for a person in a state of major or minor ritual impurity (hadath (definition)) to touch theaf, including its attached cover. This is the view of the majority of jurists. Some Hanafis held that it is permissible for a person in a state of major ritual impurity to touch the cover of the Mushaf (definition) and its blank spaces, but the correct view is that it is forbidden. As for touching books of Tafsir (definition) (Qur'anic exegesis) or other books that contain Qur'anic verses, there is no harm in that, even if one is in a state of major ritual impurity (junub).
