How many Companions were martyred during the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him?

The scholars did not mention the total number of companions who were martyred in the battles and expeditions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Rather, they mentioned their numbers separately according to each battle or expedition. Contemporary scholars differed on their number due to their disagreement on the number of fatalities in some battles, and on including those killed in the expeditions of Al-Raji' and Bi'r Ma'unah among the casualties of the battles. The closest estimate is 239, or 159 if those killed in Al-Raji' and Mu'tah are excluded.
