It is not permissible for a wife to refuse her husband's bed or any permissible form of enjoyment, and she must respond to him unless she is harmed or preoccupied with a duty. If she refuses without an excuse, she is considered rebellious (nashiz) and forfeits her right to maintenance, clothing, and equal division (of nights). Rebelliousness is addressed by admonition, then by abandoning her in bed, then by light, non-injurious striking. If she persists after that, the husband may divorce her or demand khul' from her. She may be compelled to lawful intercourse if she refuses, especially if her abandonment of the bed has been prolonged and the husband fears falling into the forbidden, unless there is a lawful impediment or harm to the wife. The husband should also consider his wife's psychological state.
