Must payment be made for the laundry service that damaged the clothes, and is it permissible to demand compensation for the damage?
The washerman is considered a shared employee, and he guarantees what he spoils, whether he was negligent or not. This is the view of the majority of scholars. Ali and Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, held the shared employee accountable as a guarantor to safeguard people's wealth. Therefore, the washerman is liable for any defect he causes to the clothes if it is significant and permanent, and cannot be removed. If the stains can be removed, then he must remove them, otherwise, an amount equivalent to the cost of their removal shall be deducted from his wages.
