It is permissible to take payment for washing the deceased according to the majority of scholars, including the Malikis, Shafi'is, and Hanbalis. The Hanbalis disliked it but did not prohibit it, unless the washer is in need, in which case they should be given from the public treasury or according to their work. Whereas the Hanafis held that it is not permissible to take payment for washing the deceased because it is an obligation.
