How do we fear Allah's devices, and trust in Him, at the same time?

The righteous servant combines fear of Allah's deception with good anticipation of Him. Thus, he thinks ill of himself due to his shortcomings, and thinks well of his Lord, knowing His generosity and forgiveness. This combination motivates him to improve his deeds and strive in obedience, while fearing that his actions may not be accepted. This balance is the secret to the servant's happiness in this world and the hereafter, as it opens for him the door to humility, brokenness, and seeking refuge in Allah, and seeing his own flaws and his Lord's grace, as in the Master of Istighfar: "I acknowledge Your favor upon me, and I acknowledge my sin." For witnessing the favor necessitates love and gratitude, and contemplating one's own shortcomings necessitates humility, destitution, and repentance. And the closest door through which a servant enters to Allah is complete destitution and absolute reliance upon Him.
