Collecting falls within the prerogatives of the Muslim leader (Imam) or his deputy, as evidenced by the actions of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and his rightly-guided Caliphs. The person collecting zakat must meet certain conditions: being a free Muslim, known for justice and uprightness, and knowledgeable in the rulings of zakat. He has three possible scenarios: being entrusted with both collecting and distributing it, or only collecting it, or being neither commanded nor forbidden from distributing it. The zakat collector is considered one of the recipients of zakat and is entitled to his remuneration from it, even if he is wealthy. He must be conscious of the trust and responsibility placed upon him.
