Is circumcision necessary for my child due to its numerous benefits, despite the pain it causes?
Circumcision is among the sunan al-fitra (practices of innate disposition) and the sunan al-mursalin (practices of the Messengers). It embodies the perfection of purity and cleanliness. It is more beneficial and healthier for relieving oneself, for intercourse, and for preventing inflammations. Its benefits outweigh the harm of pain. Some scholars have stated its obligation for males, as Ibn Qudamah mentioned in Al-Mughni that circumcision is obligatory for men and an honor for women. He adduced as proof for its obligation that it is a distinguishing mark of Muslims. He held that if a man embraces Islam in old age and fears for himself, it is waived for him; but if he is safe, it becomes binding. He recommended that the son be circumcised by an expert.
