The question

Why is circumcision performed on males and females? Is this an alteration of God's creation? If the circumcised organ is the most suitable, then why did God not create humans circumcised from the beginning?

The answer

Allah created humankind in the best of forms by making them perfect in intellect and understanding. This is what is meant by His saying, the Almighty: ﴿WE HAVE CERTAINLY CREATED MAN IN THE BEST OF STATURE﴾, and it does not exclusively refer to the outward beauty of the body. The proof for this is the Hadith Qudsi: "Indeed, Allah does not look at your bodies nor at your forms, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds."

Circumcision is among the excellences of the religious laws and a complement to the innate disposition (fitra) upon which Allah created people. It is also part of the completeness of the tolerant monotheistic religion (Millat al-Hanifiyyah), as Allah made it a sign of a covenant between Him and Abraham and his offspring, in addition to its numerous health benefits that doctors have recently discovered, such as reducing the rates of cervical cancer and penile cancer, and preventing inflammations and urinary complications.

Female circumcision is desirable in hot regions where the clitoris is relatively large and increases desire. However, in cold and temperate regions, it is not necessary. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, advised the woman who performed circumcisions, saying: "When you circumcise, do not overdo it, for it is more pleasurable for the woman and more beloved to the husband." Circumcision is part of the fitra, as stated in the Hadith: "Five things are part of the fitra: circumcision, removing pubic hair, plucking armpit hair, clipping nails, and trimming the mustache." Everything that has come in Islamic law is for the benefit of humankind.
