Is my inherent dislike of singing and my not listening to it considered following personal whims, or am I rewarded for abstaining from what Allah has forbidden, regardless of the reason?

If a servant performs a good deed out of an innate love for that good deed, such as loving benevolence, justice, or knowledge, and not as an act of drawing closer to Allah, then their action is not blameworthy nor is it considered shirk. However, it is also not considered an act of drawing closer to Allah for which they would deserve the reward of those who work for Him, even though Allah might reward them for it in this world.
