Jawd (with fatḥa) means heavy rain, while Jūd (with ḍamma) means generosity, and it can also mean hunger. Jāda al-rajulu yajūdu jūdan (the man became generous) means he was generous. Jādat al-samā’u jawdan (the sky rained heavily) means it rained. If the rain irrigates everything, it is Jawd. No woman from the early Arabs, Companions, or Tabi'in was found with the name Jūd, but there is no harm in naming a child this.
