What is the meaning of "You have made man's lust [or greed] for the earth," and why does Ibn Abbas recommend secluding women?

What was narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding the interpretation of "al-nahmah" (النهمة) is that it means need, and that a woman places her need in a man because she was created from his rib. Perhaps his intention—if it is authentically reported from him—in commanding the confinement of women is to protect them and preserve them from ruin and corruption, so that they are not given free rein. This does not mean absolutely preventing them from going out; rather, they are permitted to go out when there is a need and with specific conditions.
