What is the ruling on working for companies and contractors that deal with usury and deposit their money in usurious banks, and what is the ruling on working for them in another capacity, such as distributing and selling their products? Is it permissible to continue studying this specialization? Is abandoning entrance exams for police academies and the like correct, due to the loss of Allah's right therein?
It is permissible to study accounting, but it is not permissible to work with it in usurious banks or companies that mix lawful with unlawful if the work involves writing down usury or assisting in it, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed the one who consumes Riba (usury), the one who feeds it, its two witnesses, and its scribe, and he said: 'They are all equal (in sin).'" It is permissible to work in courts or in companies that deal with lawful matters. If that is not available, one may work in a permissible department, such as distribution, provided that the institution is not based on unlawful dealings.
