What is the ruling of Islamic law concerning a young man who attempted to rape and beat an 11-year-old girl, and does his action entail expiation (fidya) or retribution (qisas)?

What occurred in terms of assault and attempted rape is a grave sin and manifest aggression. However, as long as the matter did not reach the level of [actual] fornication (zina) or the destruction of a limb, there is no prescribed corporal punishment (hadd) for it.
