The answer

The maximum duration of postpartum bleeding (nifas) is forty days. Any blood seen by the wife during this period is considered nifas, and if it stops and then returns, it is still nifas. However, anything exceeding forty days is not considered nifas but rather istiḥāḍah (irregular bleeding), unless it coincides with her regular menstrual period and fulfills the conditions of menstruation (a minimum of one day and one night, and not exceeding fifteen days and nights). Discharges other than blood, after seeing the sign of purity, are not considered nifas, even if they occur within the forty-day period, according to the preferred view of Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen.
