What is the ruling on a stray pigeon that I have fed and that has reproduced with me, and is it permissible to sell its offspring to compensate for what I have spent on its food?

If the pigeons are domesticated, it is not permissible to take anything from them or their chicks except with the permission of their owners. Rather, they should be deterred by preventing them from food and drink or from entering the house. However, if it is impossible to expel them and the owner of the pigeons is unknown, then they are lost property (luqatah). A person may then take possession of them and guarantee their value to their owner if he appears, or keep them for their owner and spend on them with the intention of claiming the expenses or donating them. The homeowner is not obliged to keep a bird that resists being caught, nor to inform its owner, unless the bird does not resist (such as one with clipped wings). In that case, its ruling is that of lost property, and he is obliged to inform its owner if known, otherwise he guarantees it.
