The soundest opinion among scholars is that what a latecomer catches with the Imam is considered the beginning of his prayer, and what he prays after the Imam's salutation is the end of it. So, if you miss two rak'ahs in an audible prayer, like 'Isha, you recite Al-Fatihah and a short in the two rak'ahs you catch with the Imam. Then, you complete your prayer silently with the remaining two rak'ahs by reciting only Al-Fatihah. If you catch the Imam in the last rak'ah of Maghrib, you recite Al-Fatihah and a short surah in it. Then, after the Imam's salutation, you perform the second rak'ah audibly with Al-Fatihah and a short surah and sit for the first . Then, you perform the third rak'ah silently with Al-Fatihah.
