What is the ruling of Islamic law concerning the completion of the marriage of a young man and a young woman who are compatible and wish to marry, but the girl's father desires to annul the engagement for financial reasons or because he wishes to marry his daughter to another person, contrary to her wishes and the wishes of her fiancé?

It is permissible for the engagement to be annulled by the woman or her guardian if there is a valid reason. It is disliked if there is no valid reason, due to the breach of promise involved. It is not forbidden for the woman or her guardian to reject the suitor after having initially accepted, unless the rejection is for the purpose of a second proposal. If a mature, discerning girl consents to a suitable man, her guardian does not have the right to prevent her from marrying him without a valid reason, and her choice takes precedence over her guardian's choice. A mature, virgin girl cannot be forced into marriage.
