Is it permissible to give charity to others than those for whom one initially intended it?

If one intends evil but then abandons it, it is not recorded against him if it was merely a passing thought (khatir), due to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Indeed, Allah has pardoned my nation for whatever they whisper to themselves, as long as they do not act upon it or speak of it." However, if the thought escalates to a firm resolve, then it takes the place of an action, and repentance and seeking forgiveness for it become obligatory. What you did with the money, in terms of your disposal of it, is fitting for a sincere penitent. You will be rewarded for the intention to give charity or spend it on such-and-such. This is not considered a binding vow (nadhr), because a vow requires a specific formulation spoken aloud by the one making the vow.
