Is it obligatory to inform the one whom you have backbitten about what you said regarding them when seeking their forgiveness, and how many times should one seek forgiveness for them?

Seeking forgiveness from the wronged is a religious obligation before a time when neither wealth nor sons will avail. This is a universally agreed-upon matter concerning financial rights. As for backbiting (gheebah) and slander (nameemah), scholars differ on the necessity of seeking forgiveness for them. The majority of scholars stipulate seeking forgiveness for all rights. However, some, like Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim, said that it suffices to supplicate for and seek forgiveness for the person whose right was violated, and to speak well of them. If seeking forgiveness leads to a greater harm, or if it is impossible, then it is sufficient to seek forgiveness for the wronged person and supplicate for them, along with increasing in expiating good deeds. Forgiveness should be sought for the wronged in a manner commensurate with the extent of their right.
