A son's disobedience to his father in choosing his specialization is not considered disobedience to parents (ʿuqūq al-wālidayn), for an academic or vocational specialization is subject to a person's desire and talents. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded us to work, saying: "Act, for everyone is facilitated for what he was created for." However, the son should consult his father to gladden his heart and benefit from his experience.
