What is the ruling regarding someone who said to his wife, "If such and such happens, then you are unlawful (haram)" with the intention of divorce, if the condition upon which it was suspended (her family bringing food into the house) occurred without his or her knowledge?

If the husband intends, by an oath of prohibition, to divorce [his wife] upon the occurrence of the suspended condition, then his wife becomes binding upon him [as a wife] and she is divorced. This is unless he intended a specific duration, or stipulated that the suspended condition occur with the wife's knowledge and consent. In such cases, the divorce does not take place because the action occurred in a manner different from what he intended. If the divorce occurs, he may reconcile with her before her waiting period (iddah) ends, if it was a first or second divorce. He should be cautious about letting divorce readily pass from his tongue.
